Hillsborough City School District

North Principal's Message

WELCOME BACKWelcome to the 2014-2015 school year at North Hillsborough School! We are so excited to have the students back with us!! We made it through a very successful week and we can all tell that it is going to be another great year at North!!

SCHOOL WEBSITEInstead of creating a lengthy handbook this year, I am putting all of the information you will need on our new school website. As soon as all of the content is available online, you will receive “family homework” to make sure you all read the important policies and procedures you will need to know for a successful year! Please stay tuned!

KUDOS CAMPAIGNThe Kudos Campaign was SO successful last year that we have decided to run it again! We are already at 5 Kudos this year! If you are pleased with something or someone here and would like to share that information, I would love to hear it! Feel free this year to send me an email that I may pass on to my staff commending them for a job well done. Your emails brought an instant smile to a LOT of faces! The staff loved the compliments and specific praise they received last year. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make this happen for the North staff! Please remember to include our specialists and aides because they need to know what is going well too! We received almost 200 Kudos last year and I will continue to let everyone know our “Kudos Count” in the newsletters. I would love to set another goal of 200 this year! I know the North community can make that happen! Thank you in advance for your time and support for this important campaign!

WHAT TO EXPECT NIGHTWe had a fantastic turnout at What to Expect Night! It was wonderful to see so many families in attendance! I also want to thank everyone for the attendance in the MPR! The teachers did a fabulous job showing off their new websites and explaining what everyone can expect from their grade level curriculum for the year. If you were unable to attend, please make sure you visit the classroom website for each child you have here and ask your child’s teacher about any information you do not understand.

From the NPG President

I would like to welcome all new and returning families to North School!  I hope that your children’s first few weeks as well as yours were full of sweet stories and newfound friendships.

I would like to thank our North Parent Group Board members; Susan Woodhouse (VP), Jen Salma (Trustee Rep), Jean Schible (Treasurer), Sheila Higgins Druskin (VP of Events), Jen Frolik (Communications), Zara Fritts (Secretary), Julie Ledbetter (Room Parent Coordinator), Deanna Verhoeven and Jeralyn Schroenherr (Library Liaisons) for making sure that you and your children were off to a great start.

Don’t Forget!!

  • Your North Parent Dues.  If you haven’t had a chance to pay them yet, please visit the link: and pay them today or before Sept. 15th.  We depend entirely on your dues to fund our extra curriculum activities, year-round fun events for the entire family, school directories and yearbooks.

  • Attend your grade level Welcome Coffees.  Please refer to the important dates on this newsletter!  This is a great and fun way to meet parents in the same grade level as well as to catch up with old friends. I hope to see you there!

Did you know?

  • We have over sixty new families joining the North School community this year!  I would like to thank our outstanding welcoming new families committee; Kirsten Braccia, Kaye Slavet and Kim Oliff for welcoming them and arranging play dates during the summer.

  • We have plenty of volunteer opportunities available. Please click here to sign up.  Or email our VP of Events, Sheila Higgins Druskin at and let her know what you are good at and we will find you a spot!

You should know!

  • We are off to a great start in the traffic circle, many thanks to Gia Corsetti and her awesome traffic and safety committee! Please check your children’s dismissal times and avoid arriving before that time, otherwise you will be asked to exit the parking lot and re-enter the traffic circle.  Do not pull around the cars in front of you that are loading and unloading children or you will increase the odds of a collision.  Drivers, please refrain from socializing with pedestrian traffic and teachers as this poses a safety hazard and causes unnecessary delays.  Crocker kids have early dismissal (1:15 pm) the second Thursday of the month; traffic gets a little more hectic.  Please plan your arrival time accordingly.  Please refrain from using your cellphones during pick up, it’s against the law!  For any questions, please contact our traffic and safety chair Gia at

  • We have new North School Gear!  A huge thanks to Tracy Eskenazi for getting our Spirit gear ready to order.  We’ve got some cute PJ bottoms, t-shirts, backpacks as well as caps, fleece jackets and hooded sweatshirts for the whole family.  Show your support by wearing your North SchoolGear proudly!  To order visit the link or contact Tracy at

I would also like to thank Juanita Forster for providing coffee and delicious treats for the Welcome Parent Coffee.  If you are interested in joining the Hospitality committee please contact Sheila Higgins Druskin.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out should you have any questions, suggestions are ALWAYS welcome!

State Testing Update

As you may already know, state testing was very different during the 2013-14 school year. Instead of taking the old STAR CST or CMA tests**, all students in 3rd – 8th grade participated in the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) field test of the new assessments designed for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress system, known as CAASPP. Since this was a practice test for the new system, NO results are being reported for either individual students, schools, or districts.

Two of the “old” STAR tests did remain in place, however.  Last year’s fifth and eighth grade students only (current 6th and 9th) were given the STAR CST/CMA assessments in Science. In addition, students who were eligible for the alternative CAPA assessment did receive it. Scores are being reported for these specific tests, and results are being mailed to parents the week of September 1st.

Looking ahead, for the 2014-15 school year, the new CAASPP testing program in English Language Arts and Mathematics will be fully operational for grades 3-8 (not 2nd, as in previous years). In addition, the science tests will continue to be given at grades 5 and 8. The CAPA test will not be given this year, but an alternative assessment will be field tested. More information about these tests will be forthcoming throughout the year.

If you have any questions about the test itself or your child’s participation, please contact your site principal or Modell Marlow Andersen, Director of Educational Services.

** Here is a list of Acronyms to help you out!

STAR              (Standardized Testing and Reporting)
CST                (California Standards Test)
CMA                (California Modified Assessment)
CAPA              (California Alternate Performance Assessment)
CAASPP         (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress)

Community News

Safe Routes to School:  Safe Routes to School has several events planned again for the 2014/2015 School year and we welcome volunteers to assist with any of the events to encourage safe walking, biking and carpooling to and from school.  Please note the following Safe Routes to School Event Dates:

Wednesday, October 8th - International Walk to School Day

Wednesday, March 11th - Golden Sneaker Contest

Wednesday, May 6th - National Bike to School Day

Additionally, Safe Routes to School will also be collecting student data twice this year (once in the Fall and once in the Spring) on ways students are traveling to and from our schools.  This is a new contractual agreement between the San Mateo County Office of Education and the National Center for Safe Routes to School.  Analyzing our student travel data year to year helps Safe Routes to School track progress towards increasing active (walking/biking/scootering) and shared (carpool) modes.  We hope to build our community support for the program as well as identify ongoing barriers that the program can seek to overcome in future years.

Please feel to contact me throughout the school year if you have further questions at
