Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we welcome our students, families and educators back from Winter Break, we continue to reflect on our goals which are focused on learning at every level of our organization. A very important part of this learning is participating in events and activities which help our students to understanding the meaning of empathy. By demonstrating empathy, we are modeling what we want to see in each of our students. Our school community is an amazing place for children to grow and learn and one of the greatest gifts we give our children is the gift of understanding another person's feelings from that person's perspective. We teach this life skill through our words and actions, demonstrating deep care and understanding of others - especially those who may have life experiences which may not be familiar to us. We thank our community for partnering with us in teaching this very important life skill.

HCSD Visioning Sessions!

Thank you to all our educators, families and community members who were able to participate in one of our four visioning sessions for the Hillsborough City School District. One of our next steps is to hold a visioning session with Crocker Middle School students and to also reach out to our upper elementary students for their input. Our Visioning Task Force Team comprised of educators, parents and Board members will take all the information shared on our graphic records and will begin the process of developing a draft vision and mission statement for our district. We are excited about the work ahead and thank you for your wonderful partnership in supporting our schools.

HCSD Board of Trustees Reorganization

At the December 12th Board meeting, we said goodbye to retiring Trustee Lynne Esselstein, welcomed our newest Board member, An Huang Chen and congratulated Trustees Geddis and Wai on their new terms. They join standing Trustees Dannis and Power to complete the HCSD Governance team. As part of the annual reorganization, the Board elected Don Geddis as President, Greg Dannis s as Vice President and An Huang Chen as Clerk. The newly seated Board will continue its good work on behalf of HCSD students, families, educators, and community.

Happy New Year!

Our schools have received 26 California Distinguished School Awards, 7 National Blue Ribbon Awards, and 29 Kent Awards for Innovative Programs. Our success is due to high quality staff, committed and involved families and community members, a supportive Board, a cohesive vision, and a strong commitment to excellence.

More than two decades of research findings are unequivocal: the most important aspect of a school in terms of student learning is teacher quality, and our teachers are among the best!

Students in K-2 have access to a reading specialist. 3rd-5th grade students participate in our Innovation Labs where they create and explore. K-5 students participate in music classes, and 4th-8th grade students have access to instrument instruction. Spanish instruction begins in 4th grade, and Mandarin is offered in our middle school. All of our schools have a dedicated counselor, teacher librarian, physical educator, and more!

Through the generosity of donors, the Hillsborough Schools Foundation pledged $3.5 million to our schools for this school year. Last year's Fund-A-Need raised funds for traffic and safety. Thank you!
