South Hillsborough School is one of three elementary schools serving the children of Hillsborough, CA. We are the smallest elementary school in our district with an average of ten to twelve general education classes and one special day class with an average population of 220 students, grades K-5, each year.
Set by a creek in a lovely wooded area, our school has an open plan design that allows us to offer a balanced curriculum in an innovative way. Three clusters of open classrooms surround the library media center, which is literally and figuratively the heart of the school. Large and small group instruction areas K-3 permit flexible groupings to meet individual student needs. The “flow” of the building generates a feeling of warmth and communication among students and faculty. Our teachers enjoy the flexibility this collaborative environment lends itself to and work together to ensure that it is utilized as effectively as possible for their instruction. Although a majority of our 4th and 5th grade classrooms are separate from the K-3 open design configuration, the priority of collaboration and team teaching extends to those grade levels as well.
We view South School as a sharing, caring family that is ever nurturing and every growing. We strive to help students be academically successful, to learn to work together cooperatively, to develop a love of learning, and to be prepared to become productive citizens in the 21st century. Along with high expectations for student achievement in academic subjects and the arts, our program at all grade levels is geared to building self-esteem and problem solving abilities.
