AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Children staying after school for a supervised special activity must have a WRITTEN PERMISSION SLIP from a parent or guardian on file in the office.

Hillsborough Recreation offers programs after school in the areas of academic planning, enrichment, and physical fitness.

The information brochure is provided in August for the Fall program and in January for the Spring program. Additional copies are available in the school office. For more information, contact Tony Giacomazzi, Director of Recreation, or Nancy Farrell, Recreation Secretary, at 342-5439.

BICYCLE RIDING

Children must be in third grade to be eligible to ride a bicycle to school. They also must have passed the Hillsborough Police bicycle safety test. Bicycle riders are to correctly wear approved bicycle helmets. When arriving on school grounds (sidewalks surrounding the campus), riders are to DISMOUNT and WALK their bicycles to the bicycle racks. Bicycles should be locked during the school day in the bike racks.

Rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, shoes with wheels, and other toy vehicles are NOT allowed on campus.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS and EMERGENCY CONTACTS

Please notify the school secretary immediately of any changes in your address, home, cell or work telephone number, place of business or emergency contacts (including baby-sitters). IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE ABLE TO CONTACT YOU IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY OR ILLNESS. If your name, address and/or telephone number are incorrectly written in this directory, please notify the school office immediately.

CLASS ASSIGNMENT PROCEDURE

In the spring of each year, the teaching staff in collaboration with the principal assigns students to classes for the following year. Every attempt is made to place each student in a setting which will be most beneficial. Placement is based on a balance of academic levels, learning styles, gender, peer relationships, and class size. Information from parents is always considered. If a parent wishes to share information regarding their child’s placement, this may be done in writing between April 20 and May 20, or as otherwise notified in the South Tiger Tales. Determination of placement will be driven by the need for balanced classes. The principal makes final class placements.

COMMUNICATIONS

School to Home – Our South newsletter, "TIGER TALES" is sent via electronic distribution on the 1st and 15th of each month. Hard copies of the weekly newsletter will be available in the school office. Informational flyers will be sent home with your child in the Thursday Packets. Reading the “Tiger Tales” and the packets each week will keep you abreast of school happenings including Parent Group activities, Hillsborough Recreation opportunities, and other information we feel you should have.

Eblasts are immediate notifications and reminders for important information sent by school, district and parent organizations. Please check your email regularly to be current.

Global outreach email and auto dialing phone communication systems used to contact specific grade levels or the entire school. In the event of an emergency, you will receive both email and phone contact. Please check your email and phone messages regularly to be current.

www.hcsd.k12.ca.us/south, gives South School parents online access to the School Calendar, forms and links.

Parent/Teacher Communications- Contacting your child's teacher with concerns or questions you may have is always encouraged. There are two regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences each year. In the fall, conferences will be held the week of September 29-Oct 3 and the spring is scheduled for January 26-30. These provide an opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress. Teachers are not available to come to the phone during most of the school day, so please leave a voicemail, with the time and your phone number, and your call will be returned. If there is an urgent message, please contact the office. Teachers cannot always be available to meet with parents who "drop in" before or after school, so please call for an appointment. It is important to respect teacher preparation time and duties for the beginning of the day and their duties and responsibilities at dismissal times.

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Hillsborough City School District has a disaster plan in effect at all four schools. Included in this plan is supplementary water, food and first aid equipment, all of which is purchased with parent group funds. Each parent is requested to fill out an emergency card for each child in the family. Please be sure your card is up to date and readily available.

We schedule monthly fire drills, two earthquake and two lock down drills. All are conducted with the assistance of the Hillsborough Police Department and Central County Fire Department.

South School also practices a "flood walk" to higher ground in the very unlikely event that the Crystal Springs Dam breaks. This higher ground is located at the top end of Roehampton. In the event of an emergency, the district emergency communication system (phone and email) will advise you of appropriate safety procedures. Children may be picked up at the Roehampton location (or transferred to the Ascot Fire Station)s by parents after being checked off by the supervisory staff.

DOGS

Dogs may not be on campus on school days between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 pm. The driveway area and the front sidewalk outside the fence at South are considered a part of the campus.

DRESS GUIDELINES

There is no specific dress code for elementary students. However, it is suggested that parents assist children in using proper discretion in selecting neat, clean, comfortable and appropriate school clothing and shoes. Clothing and appearance should not be disruptive to the learning process. Short athletic shorts should not be worn to school unless there is a special outdoor activity scheduled. Tie/velcro-style tennis shoes should be worn during P.E. for safety.

DRUGS: ALCOHOL, TOBACCO and OTHER DRUGS

Because the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs adversely affects the student's ability to achieve academic success, is physically and emotionally harmful, and also has serious social and legal consequences, the Hillsborough School District intends to keep district schools free of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. A comprehensive prevention program has been developed and will be implemented through instruction, intervention, recovering student support and enforcement behaviors. Parents may contact the school principal regarding the specific nature of the program at each school site.

FIELD TRIPS

Occasional well-planned field trips are an important aspect of our student learning and are curriculum based. Students are required to return a written permission slip for each trip. Buses will be used for all field trips. Students must ride the bus to and from the field trip destination. Change of transportation for an individual child must be submitted in writing prior to the field trip. Parent volunteers are needed and appreciated for field trips. If room allows, parents may ride the bus on the field trip. Siblings are not allowed on field trips. Parents need their full attention for the safety and learning of the students.

We ask for voluntary donations to cover the cost of each field trip. Your donation is not required to ensure that your child may take part in this activity. Please note: student scholarships are available on a need basis by contacting the school principal.

HEALTH SERVICES

Screening

The district provides vision and hearing screening to all entering kindergarten students. Children are screened every other year thereafter. This is a "screening process" only and is not intended to take the place of regular physical examinations by a physician.

Illness or injury

School personnel are not permitted to render more than minimal first aid. Except in extreme emergencies, parents are contacted before emergency response is called. In case of sudden illness at school, a child will be kept at the school office until he/she can be released to the care of a parent or other adult designated on the student's Emergency Card. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE EMERGENCY CARD BE KEPT CURRENT IN CASE OF SUDDEN ILLNESS OR INJURY. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY CHANGES IMMEDIATELY.

LIBRARY BOOKS

In order for the librarian to keep account of South’s collection of books and to enable all children to have access to these materials, students must account for all overdue books each trimester. Please see the librarian or classroom teacher for questions or concerns. It is important to have all books returned at the end of the year. Books not returned must be paid for. Many books are no longer available and replacing/purchasing any book is very costly and time consuming.

LOST AND FOUND

Items, such as cell phones, glasses, watches, jewelry and keys are kept in the office. Other items, such as lunch boxes, sweaters, jackets, clothing items are kept in the cabinet outside Room K facing the office. Clothing items will be displayed on the fence for collection approximately every six weeks during week days only. PLEASE LABEL ALL ITEMS TO MINIMIZE LOSS. All unclaimed items will be donated to charities.

LUNCH

Students are to eat lunch at school unless a note is sent giving permission to leave school during lunch with an adult. They can either bring lunch from home or participate in the Hot Lunch program. Lunches delivered from home after classes begin should be left in the office with the student’s name on it. Please put the child’s name on the outside of all lunch boxes/bags.

Every day, hot lunch is served to students by our provider (Choice Lunch). Lunches must be pre-paid through the vendor. Log on to the HCSD website, www.hcsd.k12.ca.us, click on Parents and Community, and then School Lunch Program in the drop down menu. You will need to create and then put money in an account for each of your children. The goal is to serve nutritious meals that the children will enjoy. A rotating menu is offered.

All food is to be eaten in the MPR. Each student is responsible for cleaning up his/her eating area and throwing away their own trash. Fifth Grade Friends will help all students with the responsibility of recycling and composting. Students are to remain seated in the cafeteria until dismissed by an adult.

PERSONAL ITEMS FROM HOME

We encourage children at South School to use equipment and supplies available at school. Toys, balls, etc. should not be brought to school, unless the child is given permission to do so by the classroom teacher. If these items are brought from home, it is the expectation that they are shared during playtime. Please label all articles. Do not send your child to school with valuable items (e.g. hand-held video games, iPods, etc.). Toys and extra money should not be brought to school except for specific occasions permitted by the teacher.

In accordance with the California Educational Code, hazardous items such as jack knives, cap guns, matches, etc., are NEVER allowed at school and will be confiscated if brought to school. In addition, parents will be contacted for an immediate conference and administration of California Educational Code.

Children should not carry more than $5.00 in cash to school. Please send all money for fundraising, photos, etc. by check in an envelope marked clearly with the child’s name, grade and intended use of the money.

PLAY DATES

Play date arrangements should be made before school. The teachers and staff can not be responsible for relaying messages or monitoring date arrangements. The kindergarten teachers can only release children to authorized individuals or another parent/care-giver with written permission.

RESPECTING THE CLASSROOM

Please do not interrupt any classes during instruction time. It is disruptive when anyone enters a classroom or peeks into the windows while a class is in session. Messages regarding early departures should be given to the teachers before school by note. Come to the office (not to the classroom) to pick up your child or drop off lunches and/or homework.

Learning Zones—The areas outside the classrooms and SGI doors are considered Learning Zones. Conversations adjacent to these areas do disrupt learning. If you are waiting to pick up your child at morning kindergarten dismissal or end of school day, please be aware that instruction is still going on in the classrooms. Younger children who are with you should refrain from playing on the structure during all classroom instruction time and must be supervised at all times. Activites should take place where they will not interrupt or distract the students and teachers in the classrooms.

CONFIDENTIALITY:

Family education Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA) protects students and parents in the school environment. Any information (academic, health, or behavioral) about a student is confidential and should NOT be shared. Parent/adult volunteers at South are expected to honor this law when visiting our school.

VISITING/VOLUNTEERING

Parents are welcome to visit and volunteer at South School. All visitors or volunteers must sign in at the office prior to entering the classrooms and must wear a badge in an area visible to all identifying them to staff and students. Staff members will request that you sign in and wear a badge if your badge is not visible. Please DO NOT go directly to your child's classroom prior to signing in and obtaining a South Tiger Visitor Badge. Note: Confidentiality is expected by ALL volunteers.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT (BP5145.7; AR5145.7)

The Governing Board recognizes that sexual harassment can cause embarrassment, feelings of powerlessness, loss of self-confidence, reduced ability to perform schoolwork, and increased absenteeism or tardiness.

To promote an environment free of sexual harassment, the principal or designee shall take appropriate actions such as removing vulgar or offending graffiti, establishing site rules, and providing student in-service or student instruction and counseling. Teachers shall discuss this policy with their students in age-appropriate ways and shall assure them they need not endure any form of sexual harassment.

The Board shall not tolerate the sexual harassment of any student by any other student or any district employee. Any student or employee who is found guilty of sexual harassment shall be subject to disciplinary action.

The Board encourages students or staff to immediately report any incidences of sexual harassment to the principal or designee. The Superintendent or designee shall promptly investigate each complaint of sexual harassment in a way that ensures the privacy of all parties concerned. In no case shall the student be required to resolve the complaint directly with the alleged offending person.

Pursuant to law, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when: (Education Code 212.5):

1.Submission to the conduct is explicitly or implicitly made a term or condition of an individual’s academic status or progress; or

2.Submission to or rejection of the conduct by an individual is used as the basis for academic decisions affecting the individual; or

3.The conduct has the purpose or effect of having a negative impact on the individual’s academic or work performance, or of creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational environment; or

4.Submission to or rejection of the conduct by the individual is used as the basis for any decision affecting the individual regarding benefits and services, honors, programs, or activities available at or through the school.

Other types of conduct which are prohibited in the district and which may constitute sexual harassment include:

1. Unwelcome sexual flirtations or propositions

2. Verbal abuse of a sexual nature

3. Graphic verbal comments about an individual’s body

4. Sexually degrading words used to describe an individual

5. Display of sexually suggestive objects or pictures in the educational environment that are not related to the instructional program

6. Any act of retaliation against an individual who reports a violation of the district’s sexual harassment policy or who participates in the investigation of a sexual harassment complaint

TECHNOLOGY USE

Technology is integrated into every area of the curriculum at South School. Technology resources provided by the district are to be used in a responsible and proper manner in support of the instructional program, materials and for the advancement of student learning. Students use the internet both in the classrooms and in the computer lab. Each student and his/her parent or guardian must sign and return an Acceptable Use Agreement specifying use obligations and responsibilities prior to using the district’s technology resources.

TELEPHONE USE

Student calls are limited to use for illness and other emergencies. Students must have written permission with purpose of the call from their teacher in order to use the office telephone. Permission will not be granted if the reason is not valid. Children should have rides and play date arrangements settled before coming to school. Cell phones are to be used only for clarification of transportation and are to be turned off during the school day.

TRANSFERS, MOVING WITHIN THE DISTRICT and MOVING OUT OF THE AREA

We like to have an opportunity to say "good-bye" to students who are leaving South School. Please inform the teacher and the school office at least one week in advance if you are moving outside of the South School attendance area. Please give the office your residence address and the name and address of the new school. Inform the HCSD district office with any changes of address or when you are moving out of the district. Inter and Intra District Transfer policies can be found at the district office. Inter and Intra District Transfer requests and/or questions should be directed to the district office.

More than two decades of research findings are unequivocal: the most important aspect of a school in terms of student learning is teacher quality, and our teachers are among the best!

Students in K-2 have access to a reading specialist. 3rd-5th grade students participate in our Innovation Labs where they create and explore. K-5 students participate in music classes, and 4th-8th grade students have access to instrument instruction. Spanish instruction begins in 4th grade, and Mandarin is offered in our middle school. All of our schools have a dedicated counselor, teacher librarian, physical educator, and more!

Through the generosity of donors, the Hillsborough Schools Foundation pledged $3.5 million to our schools for this school year. Last year's Fund-A-Need raised funds for traffic and safety. Thank you!
